Nutrition FactsYour day started soooooo right. Great diet and nutrition all the way from breakfast, snack and lunch. But somewhere around dinner time you feel like you are in the mood for something else. Something else not planned: KFC Spicy wings, Au Bon Pain Red Velvet cup cake, lobster sandwich or whatever rocks your boat. What do you do so you don’t wake up the next day feeling guilty that you messed up your whole day over 1 meal? Look it up!

I remember a while back I was taking my usual lunch break walk with a co-worker and we both decided to stop by the CheeseCake Factory on our way back and share a slice of their “Low Carb” cheesecake. We were both being really good all week and we decided to ask for the nutrition facts to ease our conscious.  When we saw how much calories was in 1 slice, our  perception completely changed about that low carb cheesecake.  In fact I don’t think I ever had it again after this episode.

It’s easy to engage in mindless eating when you don’t care about the nutrition facts. It makes it easier to hang on to your excuses and pretend that it didn’t happen.  Sometimes all you need is a little reminder. Looking things up is the friendly reminder you need. When you want to stray from your plans, get the facts and consider if it’s really worth it. Do it even for salads because you would be surprised at how many 800 calories salad that restaurants are serving, like Cheesecake Factory’s Caesar Salad Without Chicken.  Never eating out on a healthy lifestyle is unrealistic. But you can make your experience more pleasant by looking up or asking the restaurant for the nutrition facts to make better choices.

The lesson today is when in doubt, look up the nutrition facts or forget about it.

It’s easy engage in mindless eating when you don’t care about the nutrition facts.

  1. Hidden calories are everywhere aren’t they?  I always look up nutrition facts and have been shocked!  Good advice!

  2. This is a great point and one that I, admittedly, often forget. It’s so easy to get caught up in the buzz words and convince yourself that you’re making a good choice! The nutrition facts tell the real story!

  3. I don’t pay attention to nutrition factoids.  If it tastes good it goes in mah mouth :P If it smells like weirdness I skip over it. I’m prolly slowly killing mah self BUT THE FOOD IS SO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD! :P

    • Debra that’s what sugar and carbs does to our body.  When you eat food that doesn’t provide enough nutrition to our body our eat a lot of carbs and sugar we just keep craving more.  Isagenix has helped me with sugar cravings which has always been a challenge for me.  I love pastries but now I eat it and enjoy it not go at it uncontrollably.

  5. My son is type 1 diabetic so checking out nutritional value every time we eat is a must for us. We use a little cool book called  Calorie, fat & Carbohydrate counter and you can get it at http://www.calorieking.com . It includes over 200 fast food chains and restaurant across North America….it’s awesome.

  6. Oh, I hate when you go to eat something and think it’s GOOD for you or at least not BAD for you and then you look it up and it’s HORRIBLE for you. Ugh. Labels, hate them/love them.

    I actually had a similar experience recently—- I had my heart set on a burger (no bun) but once I saw the nutrition facts—- I went for the tuna sashimi salad.
